Butterflies in Kew Gardens

Comet moth on a Trachycarpus

On Sunday, I popped into the Princess of Wales conservatory to see the butterflies and moths which Kew staff released earlier in the summer. It was such an amazing sight to behold - butterflies everywhere! They would flutter all around you, it was like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Most of these species were tropical, and there was a fantastic pupa case with all the cocoon's lined up, dangling from planks of wood. From the window you could watch the newly hatched butterflies make their escape from the little papery cases.
